I recently had the pleasure of visiting what has to be my favorite Canadian city; Vancouver, in beautiful British Columbia. I often stay near English Bay, a neat little beach area tucked between the soaring high rises of the “West End” and the pride of all Vancouverites; Stanley Park. It’s an amazing haven in the midst of the big city chaos, and a place to relax from the daily guest article submitting I do.
From the http://vancouver.ca/parks/parks/stanley/ website
Stanley Park is recognized around the globe as one of the great parks of the world! Vancouver’s first park and one of the city’s main tourist attractions, Stanley Park is an evergreen oasis of 400 hectares (1,000 acres) close to the downtown core. Its natural west coast atmosphere offering a back drop of majestic cedar, hemlock and fir trees embraces visitors and transports them to an environment rich in tranquility. The park abounds in wildlife and its features appeal to the naturalist, the plant lover or one who would do nothing more than relax in beautiful surroundings. There is always something happening in the park
Strolling the seawall
One of the great features of Stanley Park is the “seawall”, a delightful 22km paved path that circles the entire park, and is enjoyed by tourists and local alike. One of my great pleasures on each West End visit is rising early and spending an enjoyable hour walking the wall, savouring the damp, tangy salt air (quite a contrast from the dry, Prairie air I’m used to) and taking in the sights of a dozen or so grain freighters at anchor in the harbour, maybe catching a glimpse of a family of Canadian Geese padding the shoreline, or if I’m really lucky, seeing a Cruise Liner slowly idling into port. It’s a real nice way to start your day, except for one thing….
Where are all the smiles?
Each morning I’d pass dozens of fellow walkers, joggers, roller bladers, & cyclists all getting their exercise. On this last trip, I observed just how focussed everyone was on their task at hand, and they would jog right past you, and without a glance my way it seemed.
I come from a small town, where I know probably 50% of the residents, and to me it’s incomprehensible to walk by a fellow human being without acknowledging them with a smile, or a nod even. But not here, it seemed no one acknowledged my existence, and I recall thinking what a surly bunch they were on the coast.
The more I walked, the more I got thinking; I wonder what those people are thinking of ME as I walked by them. You see I was so focussed on deciding everyone was a snob out here, that I wasn’t doing much in the way of attracting smiles myself. Maybe I was the snob?
Getting Social
I decided to try an experiment. Rather than walking by and waiting for the other guy to acknowledge me, I’d turn it around; I would give everyone a resounding hello and flash them a glimpse of my pearly whites.
It was amazing. Of the next ten people I passed, nine responded with a nod or a smile. Only one gave me a look like I should go back to the Prairies (but I think he was tourist!)
Next ten, I kept my eyes front & center, and not a soul said a word. Then the next group got a cheery “Good Morning” & to a person they all smiled & waved.
Making the effort, reaching out
It occurred to me that walking the seawall is not unlike operating a website or a blog. If you lurk behind your internet connection, you’ll never be”meeting” people in the outside cyber world. However, if you make the effort to reach out, smile a little, simply say Hi in passing, you’ll be amazed at how many people reciprocate.
Just like on the seawall…
Some people do this very well. Adrienne Smith, for example will flash you a “cyber smile” as big as the one on her website profile pic. All you have to do is acknowledge her & I guarantee you will be treated to a resounding response.
Just like on the seawall….
But lurk around behind your screen, studying stats, building your back links or what have you, without ever taking the time to reach out and simply say Hi, and you’ll be spending your days wondering why everyone is stolling on by and never even noticing you.
Just like on the seawall….
Why don’t you stop by ten bloggers and flash them a big Hi. It’s not hard. Here’s a list of CommentLuv Enabled blogs that’ll help you out, courtesy of Ana at TrafficGeneration Cafe
Like I was on the seawall that day, you’ll be amazed at the response when you initiate something! Get Social!

Stanley park is a beautiful park, my favorite in the world. I have personally only been there once though. I would love to revisit it.

Hi Bruce I’ve never been to Canada but would love to one day.
Around my way there’s not many that take the time to smile and say hello anymore
I do take your point about likening it to blogging and I always do the same for my blog visitors. Adrienne is a perfect example of how to do this correctly, is it any wonder she won the Engagement Superstar award
I think that if people are good enough to read our conten and then comment the least we can do is acknowledge them, with a smile
Great post Bruce. If I don’t catch you before: Have a Fantastic Christmas and A Happy New Year

I’ve noticed how you treat your blog visitors Barry. I bet you’d say “gidday” if you met me on the seawall!
The best to you too.

Really sounds like a great city to visit.

It’s interesting that I am stumbling on this post since I’ve heard someone talk about Vancouver and how beautiful it is, just yesterday. I’ve never been to Canada, but I’ve got to some day. I speak French and English
I have no excuse not to. I know some people in Montreal which I heard is great as well. Thanks for the tour

I did the very same thing when I went for a stroll down the Morialta park. All it took was a smile and a hello to get a reaction from those enjoying either a casual walk or jogging by.
As for blog commenting, the best thing any blogger can do is to leave a friendly well thought out comment, one that will be appreciated by the blogger and those reading the same post. Best form of PR ever.

As you said that one smile and one hello can really make any stranger into know one in just a sec. So manytime in such places where all are new and stranger we have take first step to know that and that first step is SMILE which make lots of difference.
Anyway thanks a lot for this touchy one.
I really love that city, I have been there once a long time ago but whenever I will get a chance I will go there. Great article!

I also wonder where are the smiles. recently when I just passing by, people seem so worried and sad, so grey..I think everybody must do something that makes him happy, otherwise our everyday life will become our trap:(

Hey Bruce,
Great post. I know exactly how you felt. I moved from a small town in the Highlands of Scotland to Edinburgh and found it strange that people didn’t at least nod or say hello. But sometimes it’s up to you to make the first move.
So, a great big good morning, with a smile and a wave as well, to you and all your readers from Edinburgh Scotland.

And a cheery Good Day back to you Hamish
It’s so good when even unfamiliar people greet each other on meeting. People should always be friendly to each other. Thanx for this good post

Hi Bruce,
I’m guilty of lurking myself sometimes. I peek out every now and then but I’m more of a watcher/observer. That reminds me to show myself to online friends who are probably wondering what I’ve been up to.
I’ve been to Zurich two years ago and I remember the people I’ve passed on the road, on the stairs, or in the supermarket were always ready with their hello. And I couldn’t help but respond in kind until I became the one initiating the greeting.
Great reminder to make the effort ourselves and reach out if we want to attract something good in our lives. Thanks for sharing.

Nice post Bruce and thanks so much for the mention. That’s so kind of you.
Since I was raised in Texas, we’ve always been a friendly bunch. I can’t understand why people don’t say hello either. I’m one of those that will say hello to everyone I pass on the street, like you didn’t figure that one out already. If you are that way offline, you should be that way online too. Just reaching out to someone will go a very long way.
I bet it is beautiful in that part of the country. I’ve only been to British Columbia once and that was to get on a cruise ship.
By the way, love the new look. Very nice and pleasing to the eyes. Blue is my favorite color so that helps.
Thanks again Bruce and hope you’ve enjoyed your day!
~Adrienne
